Basketball Spinner

2012
Jesse Chorng MFA project
In 2012, I worked with MFA artist Jesse Chorng to execute on his concepts around revisiting unmet childhood goals and replacing skill with machines. From that exhibit, The Basketball Spinner was a particularly difficult engineering exercise on how we would build a machine that could consistently spin a ball on our finger with the familiar simplicity of a microwave oven. Its function briefly caught the attention of Dieter Rams during his visit to Los Angeles in 2013 to which he wryly critiqued: “you should design things that are more useful”
